Can you hear it?
Listen carefully...can you hear a faint rumbling noise? Almost like distant thunder...
Or, maybe, it's the sound of thousands of people all deciding to move in on the exact same day.
Hmm...there are reasons why I'm not a writer. See what happens when I try to use poetic imagery?
Anyhow, if you're near a college or university, you probably know what I'm talking about. All of the undergrads are returning. Gone are the days of low traffic, easy parking, and short lines at the cafeterias.
The worst, however, is the freshmen. I'll be sitting outside smoking, trying to enjoy the good weather while it lasts and figuring out how to fix whatever's broken. And some freshman will come up to me, generally with a map in their hand, and ask me if I know where some building is. Just because I've been here over four years, I'm supposed to know my way around. Which I do. I know the building my lab is in, and the buildings that the three libraries I need to go to are. In general, it's a bad idea to assume that grad students are aware of anything other than their research (it can happen, but you shouldn't count on it).

I don't live anywhere near campus, so luckily I am spared these undergraduate animadversions. But then I'm also wandering around like a Freshman right now because I am something of a Freshman.
